How many of 'em run their engines at nearly 80-90% of redline continuously for extended periods of time? My commuter car has a 2.0L that makes 227 hp (stock), has AWD, and cost less than $25K new. Granted I don't run at 6000 rpm continuously but the world rally cup guys might. (Subaru WRX) -rick- |

My bride wants a new car, and I've been trying to talk her into someone's all-wheel drive vehicle. We have snow and ice here frequently in the winter, leaves on the highways in the fall and sometimes tons of rain in the spring and summer. All-the-time-all-wheel-drive seems a no-brainer. Is there a downside? -- Email sent to is never read. |

I don't think any of these 4 strokes are going tp last a real long time if they
run WOT all the time but I do have to admit my Honda (car) redlines at 7400RPM and they usually redline an outboard at 6000. I usually keep my Merc 4 stroke around 4000 or so. It just sounds better to me .... but I felt the same way about my old 2 stroke and I got close to 3000 hrs out of it. It was still running when I sold it. |

It was still running when I sold it. I run my 225 Yamaha four stroke at a cruising RPM of 4000-4500. It seems to sound "best" at 4500, which seems high to me, coming from the two-stroke outboard world. -- Email sent to is never read. |

Is there a downside? The down side is when you "lose" a wheel, you lose all 4. You car becomes a hockey puck. |

The down side is when you "lose" a wheel, you lose all 4. You car becomes a
hockey puck. From my younger (Jeep) racing days, I can offer that the major caveat to 4WD is that it won't eliminate being stuck..... but be assured that when you *do* get stuck, you are *really* stuck.... -- Been there too ;-) |

Pretty good value for around $35-38k. |

Is there a downside? The only downside I'm aware of is a slight reduction in fuel efficiency due to additional drive train losses and a tendency to become overly confident and have problems stopping. I love it. It feels extremely safe and secure. My occasional attempts at aggressive driving have barely made it squirm. Various manufacturers all wheel drive systems use different methods. I recommend test driving on various surfaces and pushing it pretty hard. -rick- |

I doubt I can get her to more than two dealerships. -- Email sent to is never read. |

I don't think any 4-stroke outboard gets much more than 120 hp from 2 liters. Redline for continuous power rating has a different meaning for intermittent rating as would be the case for a car. %mod% |
