Default Isn't there a boat NG around here?

Seems the only general boat NG has been infiltrated, nay, hooliganized,
by a half dozen crusty, "my dick is bigger", curmudgeons who think that
by putting OT in the subject, they aren't really flooding this group
with crap.
Since you don't seem to have much interest in boats, why don't you
summertime boaties form a new group like rec.boats.fuk'em.lets.talk.politics

Good idea but I doubt it will happen. The captive audience effect
would be lost and what fun would that be?

What did happen over the years, with a fair amount of success, is that
boating sub groups have been spawned for subjects like boat building,
racing, cruising and electronics. It is a two edged sword however
since that has siphoned off a great deal of the "On Topic" threads
from here.

For someone with the ambition and know how, some possible new sub
groups might be "rec.boats.engines", "rec.boats.fishing",
"rec.boats.maintenance", "rec.boats.repair", "rec.boats.purchasing",
etc. That would further splinter the discussions and probably leave
this group with nothing but "Off Topic" which is where it is already
headed of course.

To be honest Wayne, Usenet has become nonrelevant to anything. There
are so many more forums, special interest forums and with the current
spate of blogs, enough ways to get information out and across without
using Usenet.

I've been to the other groups, one in particular, and they are as
involved in OT as this one is.

I don't mind the occasionally OT - they can be fun and enjoyable if
everybody stays civil. I've been around Usenet long enough to
understand that it's almost an impossible task. Back when TCP/IP was
still being developed and the basics of Usenet were first evolving
(email lists) there was general agreement that off topic arguments
were to be moved to personal email - everybody generally stuck to that
even when the system came into wide use. It really wasn't until 94/95
and the first OT stuff started appearing (politics again) and it
generally devolved to the mess you have now because those who
participate in OT don't have the discipline to keep it off the
newsgroups.

It's unfortunate because it is the one medium in which information
can receive wide dessemination.

Later,

Tom
