Wanted: Surveyor Reccommendations in Naples, FL Area
I am :looking for recommendations for a surveyor in the Naples area to do
a purchase survey on an early 90's 25 foot Grady White. Known issues on vintage Grady's include high moisture/rot in the deck hatches over the fuel tanks, similar problems in the hull/transom where holes were drilled to mount various items and not properly sealed against moisture intrusion and finally high moisture/rot in the cabin bulkheads. I want a surveyor who is willing to get down and dirty and really check out the hull as I can see where there was glass work done in the underwater areas. TIA for your help. Fred |

Ask them who they would use if THEY were buying a used boat. If you start hearing the same name(s) from several different brokers, you've probably found your guy. Another approach is to ask insurance or yacht finance folks. Anyone who regularly participates in purchase transactions or repair work is likely to have some knowledge and opinion regarding local surveyors. |

Another approach is to ask insurance or yacht finance folks. And this I'd have to strongly disagree with. I find this group doesn't really have a clue. Boat US's policy on surveyor recommendations had mostly to do with who would send the $50 or so to be added to the list yearly. Some of the least competent surveyors I know of were included in the Boat US group and the best not. The main reason being the least competent needed any referral they could get and the $50 to Boat US was worth the couple of surveys it could generate in a year. Good surveyors consistently stay booked and don't need the Boat US referrals. Just my opinion. bb |

The finance folks in particular have a very strong interest in not taking wooden nickles or white elephants as collateral. |
