Today is the 25th anniversary of Terry Fox's starting his 'marathan of
Hope' in St. John's Newfoundland. The one legged 22 year old runner (lost other to cancer) wanted to run across the country, raise awareness and $ 1 million for cancer research. In those days there were so many people bicycling, walking, running, creeping & crawling from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa, that his campaign was slow to get attention. As he made his way day after day....running a marathon each & every one, things started to pick up and by the time he hit Ontario...the excitement and national media attention was strong. When cancer returned and he was stopped at Thunder Bay, the whole country was saddened. His initial $ 1 mill (then upgraded to $ 20 mil) dream has steamrolled until 360 million has now been raised in his name. A true Canadian hero. http://www.cbc.ca/terryfox/ |
