I have twin 5.7 mercuisers. I did not use them last year. There was
about 60gal of 18month old gas in it. I added watersorb a few times
last year. When dewinterizing it this year I added an octane booster
and topped it of with 60gal of fresh 89 gas. I also added the Penzoil
marine fuel system cleaner. I changed all fuel filters and water
seperation filters. Both engines will start and run but there still
appears to be a fuel issue. Port engine seems to run fine but will
stall when idling/no wake. Starboard engine has problems out of the
hole. It sounds like it is not getting enough gas.

Both engines ran fine when I closed it down for the 2003 season. It
seems to be the carb's on both engines. Is there a way to clean them
properly or may they need to be rebuilt or purchase rebuilt ones?

Fuel, air, ignition.

It would seem it's not a fuel problem, but just in case, use a little
carb cleaner and see if there is some crud in there or perhaps a stuck
jet or choke.

Check for air - carbs getting enough - something needs to be cleaned
perhaps. I don't know if these things have air filters or not - maybe
PCV (if they have those), etc.

Last, it's ignition. Check the spark on both engines, make sure you
have spark on all cylinders, plugs are clean, yada, yada, yada.

Other than that, I ain't got a clue.

Remove carbs, partially disassemble and let soak in carb cleaner for 1/2 day
(any less and you may not fix the problem). They sell it in gallon cans and
it's very caustic, like the old paint strippers without the jelly. Flush
thru jets with can of carb cleaner, reassemble and install. Remove plastic
pieces from carb before putting in carb cleaner.

I pulled mine last year, engine would idle ok but had a dead spot just
slightly above idle (1200RPM), engine would choke and die at that speed.

Who makes the carb cleaner that comes in that size and where can you
buy it? I saw the STP carb cleaner that you put in your gas tank but
nothing in the gallon size.

You will be wasting your time rebuilding those carbs unless you get rid of
all that old fuel. If it were me, I'd add the appropriate amount of Sea
Foam.(available at most auto parts stores) Then run it until you get rid of
most of that fuel. Refuel, and then if you still have problems, rebuild the
carbs.
