Default Power trim/tilt CMC unit...

I have an older 16' alumacraft with an even older 50hp Merc...Everything
runs good although sometime this year I need to replace the transom...The
only thing I really wish I had was a power trim/tilt....I was thinking that
when I do that I might look into adding a trim/tilt product from
CMC...specifically the PT-130. Do any of you have experience with this
product? Thoughts/opinions? Where is the best place to buy it?

I have never heard anything bad about them. Just remember that this
is a compromise add-on and you should be fine.

I have a CMC jack plate on one of my boats. Not a power tilt/trim product,
but it is good wrokmanship. However, I have heard from two different boat
setup guys that Bob's Machine makes better jacks. Might check and see if
they have a tilt and trim product.

Hey Bob - one of the guys I fish with has a Bob's Machine jack plate
on his Ranger - very impressed with the workmanship. I had one of
their foot cushions on my last Contender - good product.

Doug,

I have an 1977 16' aluminum Sylvan Sportster (fish & ski) with a 65 hp
Mercury. I bought the boat last year. I wanted to add tilt and trim
so bought a CMC unit on eBay. About $100 cheaper than a new one.

Of course, to mount the unit, I had to lift off the motor. After doing
so, I noticed that my transom was bowed out by a half inch or so. Also
figured out that to mount the thing, I was going to need to drill yet
two more holes on my already well-ventilated transom (holes left over
from various brackets and attachments over the years).

Figured better safe than sorry, so I'm now in the middle of replacing
the transom.

But even with the new transom, I'm having second thoughts about using
the CMC unit. I think the original transom got bent from 27 years of
hanging a 200 pound motor off the back. The previous owner didn't use
a transom saver when trailering which didn't help matters. But the
tilt/trim unit adds about 6" of setback, which will increase stress on
the transom (by increasing the moment of inertia or some such physics
term).

The PT-130 from CMC is designed to handle motors up to 130 hp, which
are heavier than the 65 hp I've got in mind. But it might also be
intended for use on a transom more beefy than the one in my little
boat, even if I bring it back to original strength. The boat has a
80hp capacity according to the plate, but a 65hp hanging 6" out might
be too close to its limit.

So that's my story. Think I'll just live without tilt/trim, unless I
find a motor with it built in or someone on this board convinces me
that I'm worrying needlessly. In the meantime, guess I'll try to sell
the CMC unit on eBay or save it for the next boat.

Dave - to me, PTT is just so nice, especially as I get older. The trim
I could probably live without, but the tilt....

Why don't you reinforce the transom and make it sturdier than original?
I had transom work done on my boat for almost the exact same reason as
what you're talking about. I have a "scissors type" hydraulic lift
which results in quite a setback, especially with trailering. Quite a
bit more than the setback on the unit you're looking at. The transom
was sound, but deforming and I had it bolstered. This is a welded
aluminum boat and they reinforced the structural members of the transom
and also welded on some strong brackets across the corners - diagonal
across from the transom to the sides of the boat - very small and not
in the way at all. This is all pretty straight forward and I could
have done it if I were a welder. Just a thought.
