Cooling problem? Need Advice/Help (also poss. gear problem)

I have a 94 Chaparral 350MAG w/ an Alpha one. I recently started it up for
the season and encountered the following and need advice / help on possible
cause:

1) When running with earmuffs the water is flushed/spit out only on one
side of the lower unit. If i remember correctly last year it was flushed
out on both sides of the lower unit. I never really paid much attention but
for some reason i remember it coming out on both sides. Any suggestions on
possible causes? I keep my boat dry docked and cover the lower unit during
the winter.

2) With the earmuffs attached and shift into reverse, i heard a constant
"slapping" noise coming for the lower unit area. Doesn't sound like
metal.... But when i give it more juice in reverse it goes away, but then
comes back when i idle slow in reverse.

Things i did before the winter: Flushed and Fogged and backfilled with
Antifreeze.
Things i did in the last few weeks: Changed lower unit lube (old oil lube
was clear). Changed the impeller. Greased Prop Shaft.
I did all of the above with someone who knows what there doing ;)

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, before i bring it to the local
marine and get robbed ;)

THanks !! !

If the engine doesn't overheat at idle, I wouldn't worry about seeing water
coming out only one side. You might just have low water volume from the
hose. You should checkout your cooling system while the boat is in the
water. A badly installed water pump kit might not fail until you are running
high RPMs. You may have an engine misfire or worn out exhaust shutters. If
you only hear the noise in reverse, then the noise has to be eminating from
the bullet area in front of the prop beacuse that is where the shifting
takes place. A slapping noise might mean the lower shift cable is defective
or out of adjustment.

My water was coming out of only one side, starboard, for a couple weeks. The
mechanic at the marina said 'twas no big deal. Then my starboard exhaust hose
started burning on me while out on the water. Had holes in the exhaust hose.
Turns out the riser was plugged.

Take off the manifolds and risers and check them out. If the manifolds and
risers haven't been replaced in 11 years, you've been lucky. Mine lasted 7 in
the Chesapeake Bay. Most folks say 10 years is max for fresh water.

Don't wait for a bigger problem to develop!

PS. I read the post about over-heating. The temp gauge is well before the
exhaust system and doesn't show what may be happening to an exhaust system not
getting water for cooling.

I know that one manifold was replaced last year. but the problem side one
hasn't. Now if i take the Exhaust elbow off how do i know if it is "bad" i
know when i have taken the hoses off it is very brigth orange/rust color..
any suggestions or sites? I would like to try and do this myself because my
local marine takes forever this time of year...

It's hard to believe that someone would replace one manifold and riser and not
the other set, especially after 10 years. If I were you, I'd just order the
parts and replace the manifold and riser on the bad side. Once my manifold and
riser were off, I couldn't see a 'plug', but no water was coming through!

After replacing the parts water was coming through the exhaust. Try feeling the
risers while the engine is running. If one feels much hotter than the other,
then that's where your problem is. You should be able to place your hands on
both without getting burned.

I concur completely. Manifolds, risers, etc, anything to do with exhaust
should be replaced as pairs. Unless it is a relatively new part with a
manufacturing defect.

yea i don't know why they didn't replace both... but i know they did replace
on side with used exhaust manifold, dunno if they replaced the riser....

It seem to be a pretty simple job, as long as that's the problem. So i
guess the main test is the hand on the riser right?
