Trolling motor on a 21 foot boat?
I have a 21 foot boat with a mercruiser. Very close to the house, we
have a forest preserve with a nice little lake. The trouble is, they do not allow gasoline motors to be operated. I might consider buying a trolling motor to troll around. The question is, is a trolling motor enough to push a 21 foot boat against wind? Mine does not have a very high profile, it is a cuddy cabin type of boat. i My guess is that it would be a waste of money. I have a 21 ' boat and have a 5 hp kicker that doesn't do a whole lot against the wind. If I was 20 miles offshore and lost the engine I'd have a real llooooonnnnggg ride back in against any wind over 5 knots. I consider my kicker just barely better than nothing. Barry |

Having been around 8 nm offshoe with a dead engine, I would have loved to have a 5 hp kicker... Of course, I can't figure out a way to mount that on my jet boat since it doesn't have that sort of transom... At that point, I would have settled for some oars and oar locks... |

Even in a stiff wind, it can move the pontoon boat ahead on full power. Your hull will have more drag than a pontoon boat, but the pontoon boat catches a lot of wind. -- Rich Stern www.nitroowners.com - The Nitro and Tracker Owners Web Site www.mypontoon.com - The Pontoon Boat Web Site www.fishingreportdatabase.com - The Fishing Report Database www.mysporttrac.com - The Sport Trac Web Site |

Mine does not have a very high profile, it is a cuddy cabin type of boat. I had a 19.5 foot 'bass boat' before and It's trolling motor would barely hold it in the wind. And it had a 12/24v system that was switchable. if it was really windy, you had to use the 24v. It wasn't much use for getting around the lake, just manevering around the fishing spots. I would think that a trolling motor on a 21ft with a cuddy cabin would be a waste of money in the wind. Even with no wind the weight of your boat would make it dead slow, even with at $400 trolling motor and dual batteries. If you want to use a trolling motor on that lake, take whatever money you had planned on using for a huge trolling motor for your 21ft cuddy-cabin and purchase a 12'-14' "John-boat". It'll work great with a trolling motor. They are pretty cheap, especially used. I've seen them for as cheap as $50-$100 with no motor or trailer. a trolling motor for these are pretty lightweight and can be bought at wal-mart. It's not a 'cuddy cabin' by using the JOhn boat, but if you put a trolling motor on that 21ft boat, you'll never get more than a few hundred yards away from the boat ramp, so the john boat will do fine in that area, and more. or heck. buy a canoe. -mike |

Trolling motor on a 21 foot boat?
I used 3 trolling motors ($99 dollar variety from Wal-Mart) to move my
37' 12 ton sailboat about 1/4 mile up river. They pushed it 2-3 knots with good control in light air. I'm going to remove the outboard from my 24' pontoon camper and use the three trolling motors with the controls move to the helm. This for inland waters of coarse with a big anchor on deck for storms. Ron |

A small trolling motor will probably disappoint you, but there are models with a little "muscle". Go online and check out the different manufacturers. I bought a MinnKota "salt water" for use on my freshwater I/O, and have been very happy with it. noah Courtesy of Lee Yeaton, See the boats of rec.boats www.TheBayGuide.com/rec.boats |

I have a 20 foot center console with a T-top that is fairly heavy - the trolling motor took me ten miles up the Thames River against the tide when my Evinrude lost the spark timing. It's a 24 volt Motoguide Great White producing 67 pounds of thrust - works great. Saved my butt on that trip. It probably won't do well with a 12 volt 40 pound "special". |

There may be more powerful trolling motors out there then I think . :-) Capt Jack R. |
