Default How to protect the gel-coat

Leaving it in the water won't harm the gelcoat, but on my old beater which I
guess was left in the water for about 20 years, what happened is the gel
coat below the water line is a slightly lighter color than that above the
waterline. Algae stain I suppose but it goes a ways beneath the surface
(tried some 800 wet paper) so I'm just gonna leave it there. What I do now
that I've rubbed it all down, is clean it and wax it (3M wax) in the spring
.... well ok, my son get's that task. And if the boat was new, that's what
I'd do ... and work out last years little scratches in the process.

Hello "djb",

I don't think it will hurt the boat to be sitting in fresh water. It just
may get slimmy with stuff growing on the bottom. This can slow your boat
down too.

Gel-cote is actually much thicker than auto paint. You can block sand it if
it is really oxidised and then buff it with a rubbing compound and then wax
it.

I think the sun is the worse thing for gel-cote.
