I don't read the tidalfish message board, Herring. I have no need to
find fishing buddies with "challenged" handles.

Good. I posted your message. Can't wait to see the replies I'll try to post some

Yeah, sure, John. Make sure you weed out the positive replies, and show
us just the negative ones. That will help you with your alcoholism
produced ego problems.

Sadly, "TidalFish" is pretty much a snakepit of guys who won't share
specific fishing info with those outside the inner circle. When I first
moved up here, I thought it would be like some of the fishing message
boards down in NE Florida, where everyone shared every bit of
information, and posted as quickly as they could so everyone would
benefit. Not that way. You can't get GPS coordinates out of these guys
for love or money. The Bay is different, though, possibly because at
best the fishing is mediocre, compared to Florida. Not many species, not
many real fighting fish, other than the blues that wander through. When
the stripers are running, you'll see great collections of boats, 50-100
sometimes, all dragging baits and rigs through the same areas, hoping to
snag a fish.

There's very little fisherman chatter on the VHF up here. In Florida,
the captains all chatted with each other all day long on what was biting
and where.

Surprisingly, the discussion boards around the Virginia Beach area are
more helpful and open, and there is VHF chatter on fishing. I don't know
what happened on the Bay, but the good info is treated like a state
secret. I hired a couple of guides my first season up here to clue me
into good spots and local patterns. Last season, I even told Herring
precisely where to catch flounder, but he didn't try. He's a bait dragger.

Same here, on Lake Lanier, you'll get lots of talk about fishing,
except when there's a tournament. Some of the local striper guides are
pretty quiet, too, but I know a couple of them.

You can't get GPS coordinates out of guys down in Florida either. They'll
give you published reef numbers, but nothing else. I've had guys Instant
Message me unpublished GPS coordinates, but only guys who I've been talking
to a long time...and guys who know I respect the fishery and conserve like
they do. I do the same for them. I guess I'm in the "inner circle".

That's changing with cell phones. We hail each other on the radio...and
then share info over the cell phone (when within cell phone range of shore).
It has gotten to where there are too many lurkers on the forums and the
radio. They listen to the chatter, and then they're sitting on your spot 30
minutes later. And these guys aren't exactly courteous. They anchor
practically on top of you, and they hit the same spot over and over again
( or tell their friends about it) until the spot has been pounded so hard
that there aren't any fish there.

Hiring a guide is a popular way to learn the ropes down here, but they'll
tar and feather you if you bring a GPS aboard. One of the guides has GPS's
nailed to the dock pilings where he keeps his boat as a warning to would-be
GPS number thieves. Most of them, if they know you're from the area, won't
even take you to their can't-miss spots because they're afraid you'll be
sitting there in your own boat the next time they go to fish it.

Well, the sportfishermen used to do it in NE Florida, either loran numbers
or GPS numbers.

A well-known captain down here gave me 10 pages of numbers (500 of them
total) that he bought off a retiring fishing captain from Naples. The guide
that gave them to me usually fishes out of Fort Myers, so he doesn't run to
the areas down by Naples and Marco. There are about a dozen or so that are
close to where he runs, but he hadn't had a chance to check them out. He
simply asked that if any of the numbers close to Ft. Myers turn out to be
decent bottom, to please let him know.

Guys have even gone so far as to crop their photos before posting them to
the forum so that there are no identifying landmarks in the background.

And if you knew some of the people on tidalfish, you'd get b-mails with explicit
directions. No one is going post coordinates because people like you will be
there.

That's so sad.

Not really.

There's nothing as frustrating as heading out 10 miles to find 3 boats
camped on a spot that you told a "friend" about a week earlier.

I have an old friend in Jax who retired from the corporate world about 15
years ago to become a fishing guide. He's pretty successful. Anyway, I
hire him at least once a year during our trips to Jax (at my original rate
of many years ago) to learn new techniques, gear, and so forth. We fisn
mostly the ICW, and he years ago taught me where to fish and what to look
for in new creeks, so I'm not looking for spots with him. He's the one who
really got me started on fly fishing. Anyway, I know he shares lots of
information with his customers and other guides, and probably still does.
There are so many inshore/ICW possibilities in the JAx area that none are
never crowded.

Many of the guides, once they get to know and trust you, will share a lot of
info. But fishing is their livelihood...and they can't catch fish if half a
dozen boats are sitting on their prime spots every weekend.
