Download and run this free program:

http://www.ccleaner.com/

Download, update definitions and then run this program (free personal
edition):

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Reboot and give it a go again.

In addition to the advice I previously offered, you may want to suspend some
of the programs starting up when you boot your computer. Even running in
the background they will eat up your computers memory.

Download this and run it:

http://www.winpatrol.com/

Be careful of what you disable as there are windows programs that must run
in the background for your system to work.

You can get step by step advice on what to do by visiting the forums section
of www.pcpitstop.com.

You can also run a free diagnostic test at that site with advice on how to
speed up your computer and fee up resources.

Jim, have you used any of the freebie tests on pcpitstop? It seems like they're
giving away too much to be true! Thanks for the links though.

Yes I have. The only things they give away are the tests and the advice. I
have been relied on that site for years.

I was thinking of running the 'pc tuneup'. Have you tried that?
