Have found a 1988 Carver Montego
27' with a 10' beam and twin MerCruisers FWC. Both out drives have also been rebuilt recently. stringers appear nice and straight. I will have a survey done prior to purchase. Id like to ask the group what their feelings are regarding this boat in general and as a first boat. The boat will be used exclusively on the Chesapeake Bay In the Annapolis MD Area. Please let me know if there is anything I should be careful of with this year and model. Plus this boat has A/C which appearantley runs off batteries is this a problem if you want to run the a/c at night while staying on the boat? Thanks Paul |

Paul,
Air conditioning draws a huge amount of current. I've never heard of it from batteries - usually shore power or a generator (and then be careful not to ashpyxiate yourself). There are ways to calculate your required battery capacity depending on the appliance's current requirement, but heaters and coolers consume very large amounts of electricity compared to lights or a radio, for example. I met someone last summer who has having battery trouble in his new boat, and wondered if it could have something to do with his battery-powered stove ... (yes). (Can't help with your other questions.) ==== Charles T. So that's in salt water, correct? I generally advise against an I/O on any boat that stays in the water all the time, especially in salt water. It is really difficult to protect against the corrosion of the outdrives and they can be very expensive to replace a few years down the road. Plus this boat has A/C which appearantley runs off batteries I don't believe that the A/C would run off the batteries directly. It is possible that they have an inverter that would run the A/C but unless the battery bank is very large it just wouldn't be practical to use it that way. If the boat doesn't have a generator then you will be limited to using it at the dock. Rod |
