![]() We had a fairly several thunderstorm here last night (Friday night) and one of the big tulip poplars on our property took a direct hit. The tree is about 120' tall, and bark was stripped from almost the very top right down to the ground, on two sides. Well, the tree is coming down, tomorrow, I believe. Actually, it would make lousy boat wood, but I have seen some light furniture covered in its veneer. Damn hit made a hell of a racket. |

Tuplip poplars are pretty trees, but they are fragile. Nice-looking "buds" and leaves. My heart kind of aches for the real chestnut trees that grew near us in Connecticut when I was a kid, but I guess the blight has killed them all off by now. The trees were gorgeous, and peeling the fallen chestnuts out of their cocoons and roasting them was great fun. Supposedly, arborists nearby are experimenting with some disease-free varieties in an effort to bring the chestnut tree back. That would be better than cloning dead dog, I think. |

I read somewhere that these were available already but don't remember where. I used to own a residential lot with a fallen chestnut tree toward the back. Spent many hours sitting on that tree looking out over the valley below. |
