USING GPS WITH VHF RADIO (DSC) HELP
Hello Boaters, I am new here today. My brother has a boat and we just
installed a Garmin GPS 2010 I think it is. The manual talks about DSC with the VHF radio and the Radio talks about DSC with the GPS. Both manuals talk about it but, don't tell you how to hook it up. I know that the VHF radio is looking for a signal input from the GPS to pick up the lat. long. numbers to send out. Not sure which wire on the harness is the correct "data out" for the VHF radio input. The VHF radio is talking about "NEMA" data input. I called Garmin on the phone for tech support, but they were little help, although, the guy did mention that the Garmin only supports "Garmin data" and not "Nema" data. I guess my question is: Has anybody here hooked up their GPS with their VHF radio for DSC? If so, can you please help me out with what I need to do. We have a Garmin 2010 I think it is and an Icom VHF radio. Has anyone used DSC to exchange position data with other boaters? The manual talks about sending this digital data on locations of "where the fish are" without letting th whole world know the info. In other words I am assuming that recrational data positioning is OK instead of using it only for emergency. I am a ham and I do use APRS so I am assuming it is almost the same thing. The Garmin data and the Nema data thing can be a problem I think, but I don't know how to deal with that. I assume if anyone out there is now using DSC, you can help me. What say? Will check back here for any help later or you can e-mail me direct....OK? Thanks Louie |

USING GPS WITH VHF RADIO (DSC) HELP
It's a setup option whether the Garmin GPS sends Garmin format
or NMEA format. Yes it works. Yes, the manufactures do not have the their **** together on how to hook it up. And you don't have your **** together on what the equipment is. What are the model numbers of the GPS and the radio and I'll tell you what to hook to what. And make sure you have the latest firmware on the GPS. -- Chuck Tribolet http://www.almaden.ibm.com/cs/people/triblet Silicon Valley: STILL the best day job in the world.
