![]() I have an old 2 cyl, 4hp Evinrude motor, model E4WCNR. I am a little confused about the transmission, or rather the apparent lack thereof. There is no reverse gear, you just turn the motor around to go backwords. But I can't find a neutral-forward lever on it anywhere, despite a caution label on the top of the motor warning me to shift it into neutral before starting it. Or perhaps this motor has a centrifugal clutch? The prop spins when I pull the cord, so maybe there is a clutch someplace that is rusted together? Or does the prop run whenever the motor runs on this model? Thanks for any advice, Noel. |

Most were "start and go". I had a West Bend 2 HP that worked the same way. No clutch. It only had forward and that was it. b. |

Bit tricky in close quarters and picking up your mooring while singlehanded. My Sandpiper 565 came with a 2 cyl 6hp Evinrude with neutral and reverse. |

When I got this motor, I was looking for the smallest twin I could find. Evinrude made a Standard version that weighed about 10 to 12 lbs. less than the "Deluxe" version. Since weight was important, I looked for the smaller model. The biggest difference was that it had only neutral and forward, you turned it around for reverse. Fine with me, but I couldn't find a dealer that had the lesser version. The last motor I had was a West Bend 5 HP and it was one that had no clutch-dog. You started it and you were under way.
