Ok, I looked the situation over and here's what I've come up with for raising the mast. A combination gin pole/A frame. 1 - Construct a gin pole, say collapsible, 15 feet high to attach to the stern. 2 - Use the trailer post as an anchor for the A-frame winch. http://www.swsports.org/images/LadyLiz/trailerpost.jpg 3 - The remaining problem is remaining - where to secure the A-frame to the boat for raising the mast. http://www.swsports.org/images/LadyLiz/bow.jpg Any ideas? And, as long as I have you here, what the hell is this curly thingie whatchacallit on the boom? This is there is attaches to the mast. http://www.swsports.org/images/LadyLiz/curlythingie.jpg Any idea what this block at the top of the mast is for? http://www.swsports.org/images/LadyLiz/block.jpg My mast head has two shackles... The larger is attached to the main halyard, and the smaller one attached to a block that the topping lift is fed through. [IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/whited/Hpim0114.jpg |

[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v252/whited/Hpim0114.jpg note: Since above picture, I've installed a 3rd shackle...this time on the forward edge of the masthead casting to help in raising singlehanded. |

Sure. Put a Y-shaped foot on each A-frame member, rounded to fit the contour of the gun'l & pad w carpet, and brace it between the fwd chainplate & lifeline stanchion. And, as long as I have you here, what the hell is this curly thingie whatchacallit on the boom? Are there grommets further up along the forward edge of the sail, with corresponding grommets along the back edge? That's for securing the lower area sail down in heavy winds. The forward grommet or reef point goes on the hook, saves time over shackling it. Any idea what this block at the top of the mast is for? http://www.swsports.org/images/LadyLiz/block.jpg That's on the aft side, right? I'd guess it's for a topping lift. It may be there for raising the mast, or securing it when trailering. Sailors often put odd bits of rigging in funny places on their boats. Matter of individual taste! Fresh Breezes- Doug King |

Thanks again Doug - you've been extremely helpful and I'm grateful for your expertise. Funny you should mention odd bits of rigging - I keep finding more and more "stuff" as I get into this. Hopefully, I'll get the rigging set up by the end of the week in a test run, then maybe sail the boat next week for a couple of days. Here's hoping. Thanks again for your help. If you launch at a marina that has any commercial boats, there should be a hoist there. For loading stuff onto the boat, not for hauling the boat. Just use that to step the mast. |

In my case "expertise" is just the sticky residue of 4 decades (plus a little change) monkeying around with sailboats when I could have been doing something productive. Thanks again for your help. You're welcome. And thanks for the pics, they're interesting and also help clearly explain what you're trying to deal with. My question is, how many of your motorboating friends are jabbing you for going over to the dark side? Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
