Hi group
We are buying a second hand 9.9 mariner 2 stroke (it's about 3 years old) for our 11ft Rib. Have been reading the messages in here and found lots of info on the above model, but please could anyone advise us of what to look for ie potential problems when opening it up? Please respond, this is a genuine inquiry, and I will be replying! Thanks in advance A complete novice! -- Vj |

I would look for signs of corrosion, check the compression, and look for
water in the lower end. Does it start easily? Does it pump water? That's what I'd look for. Hi Jim
I looked for info on compression testing, and as we wont have a compression guage I found this... =========== Manual compression test: Pull starter rope through all compression revolutions. Listen and feel force required 1)Thump 2)Thump 3)Whoosh 4)Thump That third one failed =========== and ============== what I usually do is pull the plugs on all cyclinders. Then squirt a light mist of wd-40 in all the holes (if the motor has not been run), then crank over till you get the highest reading. Repeat on all cyclinders, should all read within 12psi. If the motor is still warm from running the wd-40 is not needed. As long as it is over 105 or so, all I look for is being close to the same. Also ask the owner to let you pull the bottom lower unit drain plug to see what the oil looks like, if milky beware. =============== Is it really as simple as that do you think? Thanks Helen Jim wrote: I would look for signs of corrosion, check the compression, and look for water in the lower end. Does it start easily? Does it pump water? That's what I'd look for. Hi Group :-)
Thanks for the tips, The outboard started first time and runs well, the oil was good and there was no corrosion or water where it shouldn't be. Have a great evening! -- Vj |
