Default How many boats have a marine radio?

Hi,

I was just curious to find out how many boats have a marine radio. The
reason I fly volunteer patrols for the Coast Guard auxilary and having a
marine radio makes it much easier to provide help.

Thanks,

Jerry

My experience is:
Fresh water lakes, rivers, etc (except great lakes):
Only cabin cruisers will have them
Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, large bays:
Only boats that don't have them are very small craft used back up in the
bays.

Of course this is not 100% but probably 95%.

Yes I have a VHF and sad to say I'm in the group that doesn't exactly know
all the do's and don't assocated with a marine band radio. Here at Humboldt
Bay, CA we mostly use them during salmon season on channel 68. They are
commonly used at Trinity Lake by the houseboats and those of us that have
them in our fish and ski boats. I had to use mine last year to hail the
Coast Guard for a tow back to the dock after my old 85hp Mercury crapped out
for the last time.

Where can I get one of those stickers we are supposed to have next to our
radios now, I think it's something to do with a Mayday call.

Thanks Mick

Dump "how to use your vhf radio" into Google.

The Truth is Out There.

I'm located at the mouth of the Saco River in Maine and our marina has some
thirty boats ranging from a 17 to a 42 footer, and every boat has one and
know how to use them. None of us would ever think of going out in the ocean
without one and that also includes GPS.

I have a pontoon boat on 60,000 acre lake and use a handheld. A friend that
also has a pontoon on the same lake has a permanent mount marine radio. I'm
sure we're in the minority.
