Hello All
I live in Northern California (Sacramento Region) and possibly will be getting into a fish/ski boat (outboard 115hp 4 stroke) this summer. I have 2 questions regarding winterizing. BTW, my boat will be on a trailer parked outdoors with cover. 1. I plan on doing some fishing in the winter months. If I use my boat in the lake, lets say once every month in winter here, do I still need to winterize my boat ? 2. How long can I go between lake runs before winterizing is needed ? Thanks for any help |

Very rarely. I live 20 miles outside sac (Davis Area) and winter is cold but
it does not snow or anything. Very rarely it gets below 0 "Volvette" wrote in message ... Does it freeze in sacramento? "Shakeel" wrote in message om... Do a google group search on winterizing. This subject has been covered
about a zillion times! Have a nice day. G "Shakeel" wrote in message om... If I use my boat in the lake, lets say once every month in winter here, do I still need to winterize my boat ?\ There are two parts to "winterizing". One is to protect against freeze damage, the other is to treat the motor better during months of inactivity. It is rare that it gets cold enough around Sacramento to cause freeze damage, but it does happen (like once every ten years). It will take a couple of days of the cold spell before freeze damage is likely, so you could wait until the cold spell was forcast and then do something, either flush the system, bring the boat into the garage or throw a blanket over the motor and keep it warm with a light bulb. 2. How long can I go between lake runs before winterizing is needed ? If you expect to use the boat within a month then I wouldn't bother with the "inactivity" part of winterizing. The only question is the likelihood of a freeze. For the record, I keep my boat in Stockton and I have never winterized the engine. I know a lot of people in the area who don't even put antifreeze in their car! There is a risk in not winterizing but it is small. Rod |

As stated before. Two parts to winterizing - Freeze and inactivity.
Inactivity is not your issue. Freeze is not an issue w/ an outboard either unless you have water in the gearcase or oil (on a 4 stroke). Do this at the start of winter each year. 1. Drain and refill lower unit grease verifying no water in it. 2. Drain and refill engine oil verifying no water in it. These should be replaced once a year or more frequenty (depending on use) anyway. Also make sure you store the engine w/ the foot all the way down so the block does not hold water and the lower unit does not trap water. -- Tony my boats at http://t.thomas.home.mchsi.com "Shakeel" wrote in message om...
