Power Trim problem: Motor comes up when putting in reverse
Up/Down work fine. The trim holds when motor is in up position for
long periods of time. When down and going into reverse the motor pulls up. Light reverse is fine. Its when your throttling up in reverse a bit that the motor pops up. I looked for any kind of Run/Tilt lever at the back of the boat. But I think that is for manual tilts. This is all power trim. I suspect I could have a loose line? Air in it? Weak Cylinder? If you do have to bleed these things off how do you do that? (Is it like a brake system?) Motor is a 1973 Johnson 115 v4 Heres a photo if it helps jog a memory: http://4.7.36.200/73johnson.jpg Thanks Nate |

Power Trim problem: Motor comes up when putting in reverse
Your locking pawl is not engaging properly, either because it's out of
adjustment, or because you don't have the motor fully "down" before engaging reverse. The locking pawl locks into place when the motor is tilted all the way down, allowing reverse with no kick back. wrote in message news Up/Down work fine. Can you look at the photo and point out what the locking prowl is? And does this lock automatically release when you hit the up button on the tilt/trim? Can't verify it in your picture, but its right (in front of/near/built into)
the tilt stop adjustment (the things on either side of the underside of the motor with multiple holes to adjust the tilt stop point). If you do a google search for that motor, use the term "locking pawl", as I noticed that you misspelled it. P A W L is the proper term. wrote in message ... wrote in message news When down and going into reverse the motor pulls up. Light reverse is fine. Its when your throttling up in reverse a bit that the motor pops up. When in forward or neutral the motor is not locked in the down position. This is done intentionally so that if you should hit an object while going forward the motor is free to kick up. The forward thrust of the propeller will keep the motor in the down position. When you shift into reverse there should be a latch that locks the motor down. Look at the motor mount, down near the bottom of the transom. You will see a series of holes through the mounting bracket. Through one pair of these holes there should be a rod, perhaps 3/8" diameter. The hole you select for this rod establishes the full down trim position. I am not sure that I am seeing the rod in the picture, which might be your problem. On the motor, about 6 inches or so below where the lifting cylinder attaches, there should be a hook that is supposed to engage that rod. If you shift the motor in/out of reverse you should be able to see that hook flip up. Possible reasons it doesn't work: 1) The rod that the hook is supposed to catch is missing. 2) the hook is jammed. 3) the shift mechanism has gotten sloppy and it doesn't move enough. I am sure that once you see the motion of the hook it will be obvious what is wrong. Rod |

The tilt pin only limits the downward travel if it is installed or retained at all. The latching mechanism, present on the outboard, is disabled when the power trim & tilt unit is installed - all the parts are there and intact, it is just blocked from being used, into the "Release" position, with the trim brackets installed. My guess would be that the pressure relief valve screw has been backed out, or the needle/seat is worn and letting oil through. This is the screw on the pump body that you would use to raise the engine if you lose the pump motor or electric power and need to rasie the engine for trailering or beaching. Check this out first... Power Trim problem: Motor comes up when putting in reverse
I'm not an expert in this area, but I had, or I should say "still
have" a similar problem intermittently. I think the advice on the locking pawl may not apply to your power trim/tilt system. The pawl is something I've seen on smaller manual tilt systems. If your '73 115 Johnson is like my '89 225 Johnson there is a normally open hydraulic circuit leading to the top of the tilt cylinder that allows the motor to tilt up if you hit something. In that circuit is a reverse lock valve. When you shift into reverse the valve is electrically closed, keeping the engine down. Check all your wiring connections, but it could be the valve itself. The valve is available and resonably priced, but you have to pull the motor off the bracket and get the valve body out of the (corroded)housing to change it. In the meantime, try giving it a little trim down before you back into the slip. I got into the habit of trimming back down after I come off plane anyway and I rarely see the problem. I agree. I have a '79 Johnson 115. There is a soleniod valve in the hydraulics that closes only in reverse if my memory serves. I do know for sure on my '79 it is in the hyrdraulics. Now if I could find my repair manual..... Greg |

Thanks for setting me straight- I assumed his Outboard was like my Stern
Drive with the "locking pawl". "trainfan1" wrote in message ...
