Default Eagle Depth Finder Transducer Problems

In midsummer 2002 I installed an Eagle Fishmark on my pontoon boot.
Its a great unit. After about two or three uses this year, I have
noticed that the depth readings do not work in less than 7 or 8 feet
of water. The depth reading blinks or goes to zero.

I use a full service marina to paint my boat every year. Could the
fact that they painted the bottom of the transducer be causing this?
It worked fine the first few times I was out this year. I tried
adjusting the transducer and wiping the bottom, but didn't get and
diffeent results. I do not have a trailer, so its tough to get at the
transducer to see if it is cracked.

Also, is it common for this to fail after a season and a half of use.
I upgraded from hummingbird to eagle because they are supposed to be
the best. I called Eagle and they said to buy another transducer and
see if that works, the rep on the phone wasn't much help. They want
$80 for a new one, $89 to send the whole unit in for repair. I only
paid $135 for the whole unit!

Thanks,

Fred

Paint will definetly affect it. Scrape the paint off. Also make sure it is
down level w/ or slightly below the lowest point on the pontoon (some will
have a ridge along the bottom and it will have to be below this) and is
level to the pontoon.
Doubt it is cracked or busted as it would probably not work at all.

By the way - are you saying it works fine at 10' but not below 7' or 8'?

That would be something I have never seen.

Check the settings. There is a surface clutter suppression, or
something like that, that might be causing the problem. What does it do
when it "doesn't work"?

When is doesn't work, It will flash the digital depth reading, it will
either flash the last known reading or flash "zero" if I haven't moved
in to deep enough water to get any reading yet.

I still think the paint is the problem. I know of nothing else that would
keep it from working in shallow water and work in deeper water. If the unit
or transducer were not putting out enough power - it would be the opposite.
