schlackoff, how does it feel to have a fish hook in your mouth. I don't for a
moment believe the boat had a gas engine. I was commenting of the cleaning of
the engine's spark plugs as journalistic technique to show foreboding and
anxiety. (look 'em up)

gould, nobody her but me read the book. several have googled looking for

parts
of it, but none have read it. in fact, most could not if they tried.

Well, I read it. I don't have it handy right now because it's on the
boat. Makes for good reading on the hook.

If you tell me where you read it had a gas engine (chapter, page,
whatever) I'll take a look next time I'm at the boat.

If you actually believe it had a gas engine just because Junger may have
said so in his book, you're either pretty gullible or just don't know
much about that type of boat. What model gas engine do you think they
would have used to power a vessel that weighs over 100 tons loaded for
weeks at a time? Why do you think they would have switched over to a
gas engine when it was originally built with a 900hp 1271 detroit
diesel?

It is possible that the generator and/or icemaker were powered by gas
engines. Could that be what you read and are confusing it with the main
engine? If it were my boat, those would be diesel also. Using one type
of fuel for everything has advantages when you're far away from anywhere
weeks at a time.

gene, you have too few IQ points to even begin to comprehend irony. I
appologize for over estimating your intelleigence.

WTF?????? [You didn't] "for a moment believe the boat had a gas
engine"?????? Then *why* did you *write* the following? Troll,
troll, troll your boat......

From: JAXAshby )
Subject: The Andrea Gail had a gasoline engine
View: Complete Thread (7 articles)
Original Format
Newsgroups: rec.boats
Date: 2004-07-08 18:05:37 PST

For sure it did, for the author specificly(sic) mentioned the crew of
the ill-fated vessel was so anxious about the trip that they went to
the boat the night before leaving to clean the plugs on the engine.

One sentence, just one sentence, but it clearly shows the Andrea Gail
had a gasoline engine. At least in the First Edition (for those out
there who know what a First Edition is, the rest of you can go fry an
egg). http://tinyurl.com/2ovlh

Jaxass, there's nothing ironic, intelligent, on topic, creditable,
verifiable, meaningful, useful, etc., about your post.
You are simply, a first class idiot whose main goal is to misquote or
tweak the facts in a vain effort to create a stupid argument.
You quote the fact of a high IQ and education .... this may be, but in
reality .... you're a stupid individual with no redeeming features (IQ
and education aside).
Do yourself a favor .... buy a boat, sail from NY and head East to @ 30W
degrees longitude, then head due South to @ 60 S Latitude, then turn
around and do it again ..... using a gasoline engine only or sailboat,
if you so wish.

Make 3 simple round trips and then come ashore and come back to the
NG.....by then, most of us will have died of old age or you'll have had
the BS scared out of you, so many times, you'll be less interested in
making stupid post, or at least become smart enough not to.

over the knee, are you really saying that a SAILboat with a gasoline engine
can't sail because it **requires** a diesel engine for a sailboat to sail?

you are weird, dude. there is a board out there for people like. Only
recently those clowns were discussing where to find "waterless toothpaste" for
use on a sailboat.

Oh, please..... irony without any purpose is just a poor attempt to
cover up a blatant error or an inept troll.

Please stay out of study hall and go back to class, you obviously
aren't done, yet.

Nope, VBG didn't say or imply any such thing. As per usual, your meds
have what's left of your brain, imagining some totally nonsensical
interpretation of what was posted.
Time for new meds or another long visit to the padded cell, Jaxass.

Don't have to. Know what I said. You're the one with the reading
comprehension (look that word up .... can be your new one for today)

Normally don't care about these arguments but had to enter my 2
cents...

Jax states that the author clearly states there was a gas engine. The
quote he used was that the men were cleaning the plugs on the engine.
The quote did not sate spark plugs. My engine has other types of
plugs besides spark plugs. Jax's quote does NOT conclude a as engine
existed. It may imply but it does not clearly state. No I did not
read the book because I first heard the story from the movie and if I
read the book It would ruin the movie.

I have bought a 30 year old sailboat with an atomic 4 engine. It ran

in drydock? Thoughts on replacement if its cooked?

First go to www.sailnet.com and subscribe to the Atomic 4 mailing list --
lots of knowledge there

Then $pend $50 and get Don Moyers A4 Manual http://www.moyermarine.com/

Don is considered the guru of the A4 and is most helpful with everything
from free advice to a full rebuild.

You will learn to curse at it, skin knuckles, contort your body into
positions never thought possible, but in the end you will come to consider
your A4 to be an old reliable friend. There's a good chance the engine will
outlast you.
