rich, you misunderstood. I stated that the author stated that the nervous crew
cleaned the plugs on the engine the night before sailing. diesel engines don't have plugs that can be cleaned by the crew (because they are nervous or otherwise) the night before leaving. THEREFORE, the author stated the boat had a gas engine. Rich, I don't for a minute believe the boat had a gas engine, just as I don't believe for a minute that the crew cleaned the plugs the night before sailing. Interesting, it has been, to see just how many engine "experts" there are on this ng who still to this moment think a diesel engine might well have cleanable plugs. anybody notice how absent rickie sluggs has been from this discussion? Normally don't care about these arguments but had to enter my 2 cents... Jax states that the author clearly states there was a gas engine. The quote he used was that the men were cleaning the plugs on the engine. The quote did not sate spark plugs. My engine has other types of plugs besides spark plugs. Jax's quote does NOT conclude a as engine existed. It may imply but it does not clearly state. No I did not read the book because I first heard the story from the movie and if I read the book It would ruin the movie. longliners don't use lures. The Andrea Gail was a longliner.
Frankly, I imagine all editions of the book past the first had the dumb sentence removed. Up to that point in the book Younger sounded to be extremely knowledgeable. that single sentence stopped cold his claim to expertise. sorta like pair of lox claiming he has a EE degree in physics. It could be fishing lures (plugs), and the engine was used as a table. Could have been oil plugs. As I stated it is not clearly sated the boat had a gas engine. It is implied but not clearly stated.
