Checking oil in 2001 6.2 MPI

Checking oil in 2001 6.2 MPI

My boat has twin Mercruiser 2001 6.2 MPIs. How should I check the oil? When
cold or run them first and let them sit? Will the oil in the filter drain down
when it sits or cold and get an inacurate reading? The oil filter is on top of
the engine.
