![]() U.N. Security Council OKs Syria Resolution By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press WriterMon Oct 31, 6:22 PM ET The U.N. Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Monday demanding Syria's full cooperation with a U.N. investigation into the assassination of Lebanon's former prime minister and warning of possible "further action" if it doesn't. The United States, France and Britain pressed for the resolution following last week's tough report by the U.N. investigating commission, which implicated top Syrian and Lebanese security officials in the Feb. 14 bombing that killed Rafik Hariri and 20 others. The report also accused Syria of not cooperating fully with the inquiry. The three co-sponsors agreed to drop a direct threat of sanctions against Syria in order to get support from Russia and China, which opposed sanctions while the investigation is still under way. Nonetheless, the resolution was adopted under Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter, which is militarily enforceable. Mo Syrian Bigwigs and Capital Flee under Implied Threat of Military Action DEBKAfile Special Report November 1, 2005, 2:30 PM (GMT+02:00) The threat of military action was embedded in the UN Security Council resolution. It was reinforced by US Secretary of state Condoleezza Rice when she spoke of "serious' consequences" - diplomatic parlance for military action - should Syria fail to cooperate with the final and conclusive part of UN investigator Dehlev Mehlis' inquiry into the murder of Lebanese leader Rafiq Hariri last February. |

Since the last story you complained about "not making the news" did in
fact make the news, why are you claiming this is "more"? Is the AP not major media IYHO? Besides, this issue has been covered pretty well, including Sc'y of State Condoleeza Rice's speech, on NPR. Didn't make today's news? I heard it on NPR/OPB today, complete with a statement from Bolton. -rick- |

Yes, that's what editors do. D'oh. I used to do that, eons ago. For a while at the KC Star, my job as assistant to the world news editor, was to tear copy off the various incoming wire machines, and prep it for the world news editor to present at the three-times-nightly editorial budget meeting. At those meetings, each department learned of its news hole for the edition coming up, and would offer up what it thought was the best news stories to fill that hole. There was a brief discussion and usually consensus on what was "news" and therefore what was to be published. When I filled in for the world news editor, I did the presentations and was on occasion overruled by the Managing Editor. That's how the news biz works, fella. Most of the incoming news never made the paper, because there wasn't room for it. Isn't a UN resolution condemning Syria's role in the assassination of Hariri more important than reporting on Chuckie Shumer's personal opinion of Sam Alito? |

Chuckie Shumer is the John McCain of the left. Don't get between Chuckie and a microphone because you may end up in the hospital emergency room. |
