You'll be run down by sailboters who care not a whit for the rules of the road or anything else. At the risk of ****ing off any resident blow boaters, I have to agree 100%. Why, when they have power, do they insist on sailing all the way down a crowded, busy, narrow harbor channel, tacking back and forth within 40-50 feet? Even at 5 knots, my Navigator won't stop on a dime to avoid them when they suddenly decide to tack to port from the other side of the channel. Eisboch Full reverse? \\ No big, heavy boat experience, eh? Yep. No sense of humor Harry? I was being facetious. Even Eisboch understood that. Lighten up. Otherwise, your posts here are becoming nothing more than.........*vapid*. ;-) |

I am sure we have all seen idiots like this guy on the water. http://tinyurl.com/dxz3y What makes that guy an idiot? Is it the close encounters with other boats at high speed or is it something more subtle. I trust you are kidding. I don't think there was anything subtle about his total disregard of the rules of the road.....all close quarter passes with no regard to the safety of the other boats or the possible catastrophic consequences of his maneuvers. Yes, JimH, just a little tongue in cheek. |

Eisboch The only time I would sail a narrow channel would be under uncrowded conditions where you would have plenty of room to stay clear of a tacking sailboat or if I did not have power. I do not find it agreeable to sail narrow channels when unnecessary due to the overwhelming presence of examples as illustrated by the video with this topic. |

Even at 5 knots, my Navigator won't stop on a dime to avoid them when they suddenly decide to tack to port from the other side of the channel. Eisboch When they start behaving that way, I simply stop the boat and force them to jibe to avoid hitting me. I don't do this in the middle of a channel, but in the Annapolis area, no matter what you are doing with your boat, even if you are anchored way out of the channel and either fishing or daydreaming, you stand a good chance of being rammed by a blowboter. I don't know if you know the inlet, but St. Augustine Inlet, which dumps into the ocean, almost always has a southerly wind blowing across it, and a heavy tidal current. At least once a week when I lived there, some sailbaoter would run aground on the soft sand of Vilano Beach there while trying to run the inlet under sail. These were sailboats with engines. Call the Coast Guard and tell them the captain's chugging directly out of a bottle of some sort of brown liquor. |

Plus, if you check the regs, it's illegal for a sailboat with power to be under sail only in a crowed, narrow harbor channel. Eisboch |

I agree, that guy should be banned from boating. I would think anyone in any of those cruisers would be justified at taking out his boat the way is driving. What if someone were swimming in the water??? |
