I am looking at a 35' sailboat, full keel, older. The Universal Atomic 4
gas engine is still there .. and it needs to be rebuilt.

Since I am not against gas engines [I have had them in the past], I thought
before I do anything ......... look into taking the engine out of the boat,
getting it rebuilt and putting it back in.

I know that Moyer Marine in PA is the guru of the Atomic 4. He sells and
stocks all the parts and rebuilds the engines. My first thought was to
bring the engine to PA and have him do the rebuild. That is a 450 mile
drive; one way.

Next thought; have a local engine rebuilder rebuild the engine using parts
that we/the engine rebuilder and me/ get from Moyer.

Then I thought; is there some big difference between the Atomic 4 gas
engine and the auto engines that the local engine rebuilders are working on?
That is where I need your help.............

reubilt specials, and you trade in for some credit your old engine.

Sure, a local guy can do it, but why not deal with someone who knows the
engines.

Accept you don't actually object to the petrol engine & if all goes well
nor should you.

This is going to cost you some money indeed probably more, much more
than that engine cost new back when & after 6 mths use it will not have
added a single dollar to the value of the new boat??? It's an original
engine that works OK as expected would be a potential purchasers take on
it. Everybody claims theirs is "like new" but it's not "new" it's been
living in the sea environment for ages.

Probably cost you a little more & certainly the install will not be a
drop in, but look into the new diesels you'll get more HP for the same
size & weight, much safer, cheaper to run/maintain, but the main thing
is it'll add value to the boat & distinguish it from others similar that
still have the old petrol atomic 4s.

It will still cost you of course but at least you can recoup part of it,
keeping the old is money just spent fixing something that's broken.

I agree with everything you posted ... BUT.. for a variety of reasons [where
the boat is, the situation with the owner, etc]

If I can come up with a workable plan to take out the AT4, and put it back
in ..

I can save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and get to buy the boat ..

Sure, you are absolutely right.. I am looking at short money rather than
long money.

But,, sometimes this is the deal breaker.

Time will tell.

Have to get an older guy to work on the engine. I have not dealt with one
since about 1990, but I think they are flatheads.
