I like to hear them the way they sounded in the 60s. Now I don't think they're a reasonable facsimile of a rock band. I agree. I thought they stunk last night. Maybe that is because I generally never cared for them. My wife and I did get a kick seeing all the teenyboppers scream and jump about over them......a bunch of 60 some year old drugged out has-beens who are old enough to be their grandfathers. I thought they sounded pretty bad as well, and the entire production seemed pretty lame, compared to the last couple of years I wonder, too, if part of the problem is the simple fact that it's a half time show. No accurate way to do a sound check, since the presence of a crowd totally alters the dynamics of any stadium. And, the performance is so short that by the time the band and technicians warm up, it's over. |

Maybe that is because I generally never cared for them. That's an intriguing comment only because I grew up listening to the Stones and playing a lot of their music, and have always liked them a lot. From two somewhat opposite perspectives, we managed to reach a common conclusion. Aside from purported drug use (or, in Richard's case, obvious), what do you suggest they do? Stop doing what they enjoy? Not at all. They should indeed continue to do what they enjoy. However, they need to try to uphold some reasonable standards of professionalism if they intend to continue doing it for money. Good thing they're the "Rolling Stones", if it had been Joe Schwartz and the East Overshirt Wannabees playing at the same level of proficiency (and it well could have), ABC would have cut to a commercial after the second or third major screw up. There may be other explanations or excuses, but I think I say a poor showing from a bunch of guys who thought they'd earn their million bucks a minute (or whatever) simply by showing up and *being* the Rolling Stones rather than by putting together a musically dynamic three-song set. Maybe there comes a point in time when instead of "rocking on!", it is just more dignified to rock off. |

They were actually performing live. BIG difference. Bingo. The last few times I attended a Stones concert, it was entirely canned. Mick had to be very careful where he walked, how he gestured, etc, as there were incidents where what you saw on stage from a close seat and what was being shown on the monster video screens was not completely in sync. The band could have phoned in sick, and most of the show would have gone on anyway. No excuse for screwing up "Start Me Up" or "Satisfaction" when you're the Rolling Stones. |
