Default How much (snow) did you get?

As of 6 am, we've had maybe three to four inches of snow, and it's still
coming down, though lightly.

Out on the Bay, today:
NW winds 25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt. Waves 3 to 4 ft. Morning snow. Vsby
1 nm or less...increasing to 1 to 3 nm this afternoon.

At the moment, our forecast states:

Snow this morning...then a chance of snow this afternoon. New snow
accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. Total accumulation 5 to 10 inches...less
along the Chesapeake Bay. Breezy with highs in the mid 30s. Northwest
winds 15 to 25 mph. Gusts up to 40 mph this morning.

I just looked outside. Maybe 3 inches and it's not snowing at all at the
moment. Weather Channel says to expect 15+ inches in this area, but it's
hard to believe that's going to happen.

I noticed on the official NOAH storm forecast that they say "localized
areas may receive more snow due to snowfall enhancement due to thunder".
What does thunder have to do with snowfall amounts? Interesting thing to
research.

I was wrong. It's snowing hard. It is very fine and wind blown, but it's
coming down pretty good.

Yes...maybe the thunder scares the snow and it reacts by producing larger
flakes. We need more larger flakes in this newsgroup.

Many Washingtonians will be disappointed today is not Monday. If it were,
liberal leave would be in effect and no one would go in to work.

This is the first major snowstorm I've experienced in about 4 years. It's
kinda nice. The house is quiet with Mrs.E visiting in Norfolk. Sam Adams
is happily munching on a rawhide bone, and I am sitting here wondering why I
get up so early in the morning.

Just been reading about "Thundersnow". Not very common and occurs when
there is deep, elevated convection in areas of a storm. The thunder is a
by-product of the elevated convection, as is localized, intense areas of
precipitation.

Gawd, if they only would! The bureaus are infested with them. And
Washington certainly doesn't suffer from a shortage of snow because of
them.

First, don't be blaming this snowfall on me. ;-) Secondly, thunder
doesn't increase the amount of snow, but is a symptom of "convection
snow." Normal snow clouds are relatively low, but when you have a very
unstable airmass, convection will build clouds to a much higher level,
much like a summer thunderstorm. The added height means added snowfall.
Sometimes reaching several inches per hour. As is a thunderstorm, the
effect is usually local.

The above explanation is well short on the actual science, but is all I
remember after asking a local amateur meteorologist, "What the f... is
convection snow?"

Sounds like you need a party at your place...

Two of my cats, the two that like snow, are signaling they want to go
out for a romp. That means I have to go out with them. The smarter cats
are hiding under the bed.

Harry,
Do you mean you cats go on a leash or they are trained to come on
command? I have never known a cat who can pass up an opportunity to do
some hunting while they were outside. Mine would always bring home a
mouse or lizard as a present.

And then I'd lose my sub pay for Monday's job. The county may have a
two-hour delay, which means I get paid for only five hours. Thank goodness
I'm not in it for the money, but for the love of kids and wanting to 'give
back' to my country...
