With any sort of luck, we're evolving from a non-moderated group to a self-moderated group where most of the participants assume the responsibilty for monitoring and controlling their own participation here. That's an idealistic goal that we'll never reach, but the group has improved by striving in that direction. Moderators can kill off a NG just as surely as continuous free-for-all chaos will, so the only available solution is widespread personal responsibility. In a self moderated group, peer pressure is a substitute for a moderator's ability to kill or delete a post. It's a bit like a model of democracy in action. Freedom of speech swings two ways; you're free to speak, but others are free to comment if they agree, disagree, or (as in the case of the thread that started this) feel that the speech was inappropriate for the venue. Why not discuss boats, Jim- and not your fellow boaters? When are you planning your first spring cruise? Where will you go? Weren't you upgrading your upholstery, or something, this winter? How did that turn out? Still happy with the vinyl repairs after a few weeks of looking at them? Are you secretly lusting after the "next" boat already, or are you still enthralled with the one you now own? Any noteworthy, boaty "events" taking place in Ohio this time of year? When does fishing season open around there, and is there much of anything left to catch? etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc |
