On May 17th, in Richmond, VA, the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation
is sponsoring a race for the cure. As most of you know, my daughter Renee
was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, at the ripe old age of 39. She
underwent a mastectomy, is undergoing chemotherapy, and will undergo a
hysterectomy and thyroidectomy soon. She is hanging very tough and is still

Hi John,

My sister is 50, and two years ago she also went through nearly the
same thing. Surgery, chemo, radiation, etc. She's doing great now,
and just participated last night in the "Walk for Life" event in this
area. My wife and I helped sponsor her.

Just last week we found out my dad has prostate cancer. He's going to
the oncologist Monday, and is slated to undergo at least the
radiation. He's 79, so it's likely something else will take him
before this does, but it's still not fun. My wife and I are a bit
jaded, as we've never lost a close family member to anything... yet.

Our best wishes to you and your daughter Renee.

Thanks Jack. My daughter has such a great spirit that I'm probably in worse
shape about it than she is. At least there's something she can do for
herself. I feel like there's not a damn thing I can do. I hate the feeling
of helplessness. I usually like to *fix* problems, not be on the sidelines
watching the problem get worse. Putting the web donation site together is
the only thing I've been able to do for her, other than babysitting or
taking her to her chemo treatments.

Sorry to hear about your dad, but glad to hear your sister is doing well!

We will happy to support the "race" with a donation and with best wishes for
a speedy and complete recovery for your daughter.

A bit of encouragement:

Mrs.E went through the same thing, mastectomy, 6 months of chemo and also
had nuclear radiation treatment for an over active thyroid. She was 45 at
the time. Today, 10 years later, she is healthy and cancer-free.

Interestingly, her oncologist told me at the time that they can deal with
the cancer. He was more concerned about controlling the thyroid problem,
and was successful in doing so.
