Posting this same article every month or two is beginning to feel like
spam. Its particularly annoying because the article opens with the claim that ASA is the "governing body" for sailing in the USA. It most certainly is not; it is simply a for profit training company. USSailing is the governing body. I have nothing against ASA, its just that an article that starts out with a blunder like that either has a hidden agenda is is just plain sloppy research. Get a boat you can afford. Select a nice day, when the winds are
slightly above calm, and go sailing. The problem with sailing is not making the boat got but to make the boat go where you wanted. As you become comfortable with that wind condition go with slightly higher winds the next time. That's OK if the person has some idea of how to sail. I've seen it many times,
someone who has no idea how to sail will invariably point the boat 'at' the wind (presumably because anything else will make the boat lean to one side) & then wonder why it doesn't go anywhere. Many yacht clubs offer "Crew" memberships. For a minimal membership fee
plus the cost of a good pair of deck shoes anybody can learn sailing. |
