Interesting! I suppose nobody wants to swim in that cold
January/February water. (It's done in Finland, of course...) Where is
pier 39 located?

San Francisco, and there is the South End Rowing Club a little west of Pier
39, where there are swimmers all year. Near Marina Green, the place where
you saw most of the damage during the 1989 Earthquake. The California Sea
Lions have sunk boats, etc. They have become a major problem, but even
though they are not and have never been an endangered species, under Federal
law, you can not harass them. If they invite themselves aboard, you are
legally not allowed to kick them off. They have increased so much, that
they will take as much as 75% of a commercial salmon trollers catch. They
hang around the party boats and wait for dinner.
