Default 12 volt Batteries - branda and/or where to buy ??

So from replies to another thread I decided on
a pair of flooded dual-purpose Group 27 batts
for my run-about. They will be on an A/B/ALL
switch with a battery combiner to be sure both
batteries get charged.

I'm wondering which brands are better or which
are worse and to avoid. Also what stores to check
out for best prices.

I'm in the Mass / CT / New York area.

Bill mentioned Costco - so maybe that's where
I'll look.

Thanks,
Gary

When I was looking for a deep cycle/trolling motor battery a
couple of years ago, I found that Costco did have the best price
for one of the highest capacity batteries. Further research and
I found that Costco's 'Kirkland Signature' batteries were made
by Johnson Controls which makes such obscure names as "Diehard,
Duralast, Energizer, Equalizer, Eveready, Everstart, Interstate,
Motocraft, Optima, and Prostart'. :^)

You can find this info at:

Gary, check out the thread that I am involved right now called

-alternator over charging-. it is under rec.boats.electronics. see
what they say about the a/b/all switch and how you should not move the
switch while the engine is running or you may cuase damage to the
alternator and other things as well
it was news to me.
by the way I have to 27 batteries made by mega-something maybe
megathon. both the mechanics I used recommended them. oh by the way
they both sold them also/
hope that all is well.

Thanks Rich.

I've heard that about not moving the A/B/ALL when operating.

Some of the switches are "make before break" where the next connection (say
to
battery 2) is made before the connection (say to battery 1) is broken. This
helps
protect the alternator and also any electronic equipment on board from
spikes.
I've been told that my boat (which has a generator not an altenator) should
be
more resilient to these problems. But my switch *does not* have this
protection.
In general, I'd rather not trun the switch while running. That's part of why
I'm putting
in the automatic battery combiner - removes the need to flip the switch.

THANKS for the tips on the batts. If you have names / numbers of the
machanics that sell your type batteries I'd call and check with them.

Will be at the crabbie this Friday "after work" ~ would love to boat
ride but will have too many people around for that. What 'cha doing
Sunday ???

Delilah is OK but still not done. Still messing around with trailer
welders .....ErRRrrrr.

Gary.

By the way - that's and interesting thread about your altenator.

I have my electronics all done & wired but may make a few
modifications that will simplify + add more safety.

Hi Gary,
I have found 2 places where one can obtain group 27 batteries at a
reasonable price. Costco has some but so does Walmart, and for a little
less money too. Warranties are the same. Costco does have a "group 27
rated" gel cell that will work even if the battery compartment gets
filled with sal****er. This will completely kill a flooded cell. It
might be a thought to use one of these for your starting/transmitter
battery. I have an independent battery system for my transmitter and GPS
powered by an AGM motorcycle battery. It is diode isolated from the
primary system, but gets a continuous charge through the diode.

If you wish, I will send you a electrical scematic of how to hook this
puppy up.
