I'd like to recommend a canoe adventure story. It's called "River of
Doubt" and is the Teddy Roosevelt expedition of a trib of the Amazon in Brazil. They ran the river in dugouts and built new canoes on the spot when the ones they started with were dashed in the rapids. Most memorable scene to me was towards the end when one of their hired hands went a little crazy and murdered one of the group leaders. Our former president was all for "jungle justice" and killing the killer then and there. The Brazilian expedition leader was horrified and said that's not how Brazilians handle thing - that the killer was to be apprehended and brought to justice through a court of law. Ironically, the full title of the book is "River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey". |

Looks like it would make an excellent movie. Most memorable scene to me was towards the end when one of their hired hands went a little crazy and murdered one of the group leaders. Now you can see why TR was actually a horrible imperialist, not the cute independent nature-loving ex-President of sycophantic history books. |

On the History Channel's show on TR they show pictures
if not film of some of that trip. Looked to be real adventure especially in that day and time. "Mothra" wrote in message oups.com... I'd like to recommend a canoe adventure story. Another good winter read is The Last Season by Eric Blehm - "In 1996,
after nearly 30 seasons as a park ranger in the Sierra Nevadas, Randy Morgenson set off on a routine patrol and never came back." The book tells Morgenson's life story and the efforts made to locate him. Mothra wrote: I'd like to recommend a canoe adventure story. I can't wait to read this book. Sounds great, and I'm already a huge
fan of T. Roosevelt. He was a multi-faceted man with plenty of worts, but he did cram alot of living in his lifetime. -John www.sourcetosea.net |
