Hey, i’m looking at avon, achilles, mercury.....all in the 8 foot
range....i heard hypalon isnt needed in the northeast climate, is this true. What brand should i go with? Inflable or rigid buttom? any comments would be helpful thanks! -- Posted at author's request, using fully moderated http://www.BoatingForumz.com/Boat-Ge...-forum-12.html interface |

If you're mostly worried about weight, get a fully inflatable. If you
want more performance, get a RIB. Check out Walker Bay's new Genesis: http://www.walkerbay.com/products/genesis.php VERY cool! Also, if the sun shines where you boat, you need Hypalon. Avoid PVC like the plague. |

Hmmm, I see they have gone way up in price since I got mine in '97.
Hypalon is the desired material, no matter where you are. Avoid PVC. A slat bottom boat is the less expensive, will fold up and stow better, will not plane at all, and have very little freeboard w/adults aboard (8'). If your not in a hurry, and do not intend to overload, and...in calm water only, the slat boat is fine with about 3.5 HP. An RIB is better, has significantly more freeboard, will plane with the proper HP and thus faster, and generally safer with passengers. Also, much more expensive.
