Hi,
Well, those on rec.boats.cruising or http://www.bcboatnet.org know I'm selling my beloved Catalina 36, Far Cove. Plan is to downsize, probably to an Islander 28. Problem is, I probably won't be buying the Islander until fall/winter. So: first summer in 30 years without a cruising sailboat??? ![]() I saw an Oday 22 on a trailer for $2800 ( complete with a $1000 CB radio, supposedly... ![]() around the Gulf Islands in her... reminds me of my first cruising boat, a Venture 22. So: any Stories of Oday 22s? Are they really slower than a Columbia 22? druid http://www.bcboatnet.org/FarCove |

We hade an early 22 (#65) for many years (I think it's still sitting in my
cousin's back field). Nice boat, but doesn't hold up very well if you like to sail - we had a lot of rigging failures. Chainplates were a weak point. Sucks to have them pull out on a reach. With the short keel and rudder, it tended to round up as soon as you start to heel more than about 30 degrees; using a genny it was usually manageable (of course if you sail under just genny, you sometimes buckle the mast!) We never won any races, but that can't be blamed entirely on the boat. $2800 sounds like a lot, but if it has newish sails, trailer, rigging, etc, it could be a good deal. Maybe you should look now for the Islander. The Islander was father in laws and he passed away. |

However, I can't find ANYTHING (that doesn't have it's side stove in from a hurricane) for under $3K CDN. And this one comes with reasonable trailer (Probably worth close to $1000) and a 9.9 Honda (at least $1000). As for Islanders, I haven't found ANY in the PNW (where I can sail it up to Vancouver), and it will cost $4000CDN to truck one up from CA (even more from the East Coast). (That's from TWO independant quotes) I'm hoping to find one at least in Seattle area, but most I find are East Coast, and over $15K CDN. Another option is a Crown 28, which ARE relatively popular here, but my Lady wouldn't like the head in the same "room" as the forepeak where we sleep. As for the "temporary boat": I'd love to find a Cal 25 (or even a Catalina 22) for $2k (here) but it ain't gonna happen. druid http://www.bcboatnet.org |

I missed the part about the motor. And that the dollars are Canadian. If
everything is serviceable, and you are comfortable with the amount of elbow grease required to get it sailing, this is probably a good deal. But check it over, and remember that replacing sails, rigging, and amenities will cost real money. Sal's Dad Interesting... two people have said $2800 is a lot to pay for this boat. I would think it would be do-able, but I wouldn't be used to the boat, and there is that long slog, upwind and against the current, from Astoria to Juan de Fuca. Another thing brought up was the amount of wear-and-tear and damage that trip would cause. So: sailing up from Seattle (or even Olympia) OK, but on the "outside" - no. And CERTAINLY not from anywhere on the East Coast. druid http://www.bcboatnet.org |
