Default Massachusetts Boating License & Registration?

I just moved to Mass. a few months ago and bought a used boat for the
upcoming season. What's the procedure of getting a boating/pwc license
and registration of the boat?

Thanks,

- Dave

As in 43 other states, it's likely you will need to qualify for a
Mass. "Boater's Education Card" to legally operate a boat in that
state.

Chuck, if you don't know the answer, there is no need for you to respond
with misleading guesses.

Take a look at http://www.boat-ed.com/ma/handbook/toc.htm or
http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/ for all the information you need. No user
"license" is required if you are over 18, a bit more complicated for minors.

Did you bother to visit the site Chuck posted, JimH? This information can
be found the

The restrictions below apply to boats propelled by any type of motor,
whether or not the motor is the principal source of propulsion.

* A person under 12 years of age may operate a motorboat on
Massachusetts public waters only if accompanied on board and directly
supervised by a competent person 18 years of age or older.
* A person 12 through 15 years of age may operate a motorboat on
Massachusetts public waters only if he or she:
o Has passed a state-approved boating education course or ...
o Is accompanied on board and directly supervised by a competent
person 18 years of age or older.
* A person 16 years of age or older may operate a motorboat on
Massachusetts public waters without age restrictions.

Sounds like Chuck did a pretty good job of directing the OP.

How did I get involved in this? I guess Herring is having another senior

Actually, John, I didn't really dig into it that deeply.

There's no "license" required in most states, but most states now
require a boater's education card. I simply thought that possibility
was being overlooked, and suggested the OP check it out as something
"likely" to be required.

The Massachussetts law will only require his kids, if any, to qualify
for boater's education cards before operating the boat- but depending
on his family situation that might be important information to have.
