Default Rattleing noise from Mercruiser 140

BUMP....

Just wondering if maybe it got missed

Thanks,

Hey all... I wish I could give back what I get from this group... Anyways,
I'm having another problem...a small one I hope... when I'm in gear

(havn't
tried in reverse) and above 1000RPMs I hear a kind of a rattleing clanging
noise coming from the back end... my thoughts are U-Joints and Gimbal (as

I
didn't replace them when I did the bellows') It seems to getting mildly
worse as I use the boat more... it's a 77 Mercruiser 140... If it turns

out
to be the U-Joints, do I need to replace just the U-Joints or do I need to
replace the whole shaft?

Thanks a lot again!

Hello,
No,you can just replace the u-joints but it is reccomended to replace
the splined shaft leading into the coupler. first you'll need to pull
things apart...but i would say at a minimum you'll be looking at 2
u-joints,all 3 bellows should be replaced as well. But you cant tell
untill you have it apart...you may even have a shot coupler. i would
grease the gimbal bearing "heavily" and take it for a ride to see if
the noise is as bad, maybe that will give you more of an idea what
your in for.

Check the watter shutter. When they go it sounds like an intermittant
rattleing noise. The noise usually goes away after the engine warms up.
