I bought a Honda 4 stroke 2hp motor 6 years ago. The first required
maintenance is at 10 hours; changing the engine oil and the gear case oil. I used it for about 2 hours and then put it in storage because I sold the boat I used it on. I drained the gas, changed the engine oil and the gear case oil. This year I bought a new boat and put another 2 hours on it, and am putting it away for the winter. Should I bother changing the oils? It isn't called for even once for another 6 hours, and I have already done it once. On the other hand, I don't want to wreck an expensive motor for a little oil. Whatcha think? |

What's a few bucks for oil compared to the price of the motor? That's right...especially the gearcase oil. I'd also fog the cylinder. The owners manual must mention winterizing. |

@news01.roc.ny: Should I bother changing the oils? Yes. Combustion products that got into the oil when it ran started eating away at the lubrication properties of the oil. This continues indefinately on used oil. Make TWO notations for oil changes in all your vehicles....miles/hour as you are doing now....and SIX MONTHS (time). Even if you only drive your car 500 miles in 6 months...change it every 6 months. There's a 1973 Mercedes 220 Diesel parked outside my door that attests to how good this 6 months oil change is for engines. Larry -- Oil is REALLY CHEAP in comparison to new engines and overhauls! |

Nope, just fog it and put it away. Nothing wrong with the oil that's in it.

I called Honda; if they said to let it go I figured that would be definitive. But they said to change it. I don't take that as resolving it though; naturally they are going to take the conservative route to hold down warranty claims. But I am going to change it. Probably a waste of oil, but that beats a waste of an engine. |

If you lay the outboard up... do the winterizing schedule.. change oil, gear lubricant, run some treated gas (with stabilizer) through the motor before cutting off the supply. I'd also drain my fuel tank, fog my cylinder and keep that tiny motor in the basement for the winter. |
