Update your TomTom software.

I did it yesterday and what a difference in performance.

No joke - I did the upgrade on the One I have and - get this - it
provides instant lock on satellites.

I'm absolutely serious - instant lock. As in full lock - ten
satellites.

I have no idea how they did it, but it boots faster and you get a full
lock on position instantly.

It's also tracking much better and before, it wasn't bad at all.

They changed something and it's really for the better.

As in WAY better.

I updated and it indeed locks in faster. But now I have to remove the
memory card (clicking on it so it dislodges) to turn the darn thing on.
Once on, I then click it back into position. Not a big deal but
annoying.

I will be calling their support department tomorrow to see what the fix
is.

Why do you have a memory card?

The older, original TomTom's - like the 300 - had an SD card that
contained
the maps.
The 700 model had the mini hard drive. Mine has an SD and Mrs.E.'s has
the
hard drive.

Both can still be updated via the Internet download, but I haven't
bothered.

Hmmm - I thought Jim had the TomTom One.

Which has a slot for a SD card, but the maps are preloaded.

I do have a Tom-Tom One. It was advertised at 3rd edition.

Hmm - interesting.

BTW: I fixed the problem by pushing in the reset at the bottom of the unit.

I was going to suggest that. Mine is a firmware reset.

Thanks. I'll check it out. The units we have are older ones .... mine's
a TomTom 300 and Mrs.E. has a TomTom 700. I don't know if those units
are included in the updated software.

Rarely use them anyway because I rarely go anywhere.

Same here. We finally got a 'Best Buy' store in this area and they had a
Tom Tom model on 'opening day special'. regular $450.00 sale price $200.00.
I struggled with the decision of fighting the crowds at this place across
the harbour...since they only had a limited number of units available. (50
or less).
Then I asked the burning question... how often would I use it? Took the
dog down to a local park instead.
note: at this time the province is thinking of banning cellphone while
driving.... all we need is a rash of accidents caused by inattentive
drivers fiddling with navigation devices and the same banning could be in
the future.

They banned cell phones while driving here in CT two years ago.

Know what?

Hasn't changed a freakin' thing.

The only reason they pass laws like that here is so locals can invent
"probable cause" to pull over and shake down, or chat up whoever they
choose.

Because it came with one and will not operate without it.

What model do you have?

TomTom One, 3rd edition. It came in a light green box.

You must have the Tom Tom One Third Edition early model. Mine was the Tom
Tom One Third Edition Upgrade. It had 48 favorites, No memory card, No way
to add or edit custom POIs, No way to back up, but they did have a Dunkin
Donut POI file you could download from their site. What a piece of ****!

Say what?

Man - you need to take another look - all that is doable from either
the machine or via TomTom Home (ver. 2).

Too late, I'm afraid. I'm going to have to settle for 500 or so waypoints
and unlimited sets of POIs that I can arrange, change, and update the way I
want. I can do all this with the 10+ year old Mapsource program that I
bought for my Garmin Emap, and Garmin's POI loader. Tom Tom might make some
fine machines but the one I bought was low end crap. I replaced it with a
much better machine for a few bucks more.

I guess it all depends on your needs. The TT One meets all mine and the
price was right.

I would not call it crap but a best buy meeting basic needs.

If yours came with a SD card you got something better than I did. I can't
understand why 2 items labled the same can be so different.

I'm confused. Supposedly, we all have the same machines, but everyone
is different.

Hmmmm....
