....anything *here* , knowing the naysayers are just waiting to pounce,
but... I just helped a friend buy and set up an external hard drive as a backup unit for his laptop. It's a LaCie D2 Quadra, 320 gigs. Nothing unusual there, but...the Quadra refers to the four ways of hooking it up to a computer: USB2, Firewire 400, Fireware 800, and, fastest of all, SATA. It's a very nice unit, in an aluminum case, and comes with Retrospect software for a Mac or a PC. The unit was $180, but MicroCenter, a national storefront chain with internet ordering, too, has it at $129. This is the unit: http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0263211 There's plenty of competition for this unit, of course. You pays your money and you takes your choice. |

I will be installing 3 external backup drives this week for one of my customers... looks like I might go with these. I periodically look at www.slickdeals.net and get deals from there as well, From what I gather it is basically a co-op where individuals report a deal when they find one. what backup utiltity is your friend going to use? I been using Acronis but am not as happy with their newer versions. btw... was going to de-winterize my boat a few weeks ago but the Oregon weather turned cold recently. Can't wait to get the boat out there! Dennis |

Can't wait to get the boat out there! Dennis He's got a Mac laptop, so he decided to use SuperDuper backup. We configured the button on the front of the LaCie to invoke SuperDuper so that it runs when he wants it to, rather than "automatically," because he doesn't always have the laptop switched on. Hooked it up to the laptop via Firewire 800. I bought one yesterday myself, and will use it to backup my Macbook. I had been using SuperDuper to back that laptop up to my Windoze home server, but the latter won't at this point handle a full restore to a Mac that has gone dead. It doees handle file restoration, though. I like the ergonomics of the LaCie a lot better than the WD "book" external drives. The LaCie also has a three way on-off switch: on, off and auto. The latter spools the hard drive down when the Mac is switched off. Cool beans. |
