TomTom
There were posts here a couple of months ago regarding the TomTom GPS units.
Are the users here satisfied with them? What version are they? I see version 3 is $50 more than version 1. Worth the extra dollars? |

I've got a Garmin Roadmate 1200 that is the best $150 I ever spent. I'm amazed at it's accuracy. |

Worth the extra dollars? I have the Verson 2 Tom Tom One and love it. My only complaint(s) is that glare can sometimes make the screen unreadable and you really have to update the satellite information every week (usually on Sunday) for the quick load funciton to work properly. Even without the update, it takes roughly a minute to grab location data and about two minutes to grab all the available satellite data improving initial accuracy. There is a minor hitch in the supplied software (Tom Tom Home) that requires you to update to a new revision - the older version was a royal PITA, but the Home 2 version is great. It's reasonably accurate in terms of finding places - usually within 30/40 feet occasionally - most of the time it's spot on. Part of that is how the address data is reported. For example, it will bring me to my neighbors house exactly at his driveway using his address. Using my address, it puts me three houses down the street. That is a map address error in the data base. Google does the same thing believe it or not - the data is corrupted. Tom Tom's software has a glitch in it that is amusing and annoying - it will randomly give out a left turn direction for no reason. I had that happen on the highway down to South Carolina - twice. However, at the critical junctures, it does fine. You can confuse it and it occasionally gets stubborn. Going down to SC for example, it's great - gives you the route with no problems. Coming back up the same route, it insists that you travel through Albany, New York - you reset and it still insists you go through Albany New York. I haven't figured that one out yet and according to Tom Tom, it's not supposed to do that. Other than that, like I said, I can live with the little burps. Great unit and I understand the newer versions are even better. |
