I read on various forums everyone complaints about manatees Speeds over five or so are forbidden along large stretches of the ICW in Florida, so that boats wouldn't hit them. There aren't nearly as many killed, or collecting prop scars, in recent years. Casady I regularly see Manatees on the Wakulla River and they seem to sleep right at the surface so one can approach em in a canoe and get right next to them. It is easy to see how they get hit by props sleeping like that. I saw one this past March with numerous prop scars. The one I saw last week seemed to have none. |

Well, I don't know much about this issue except it makes sense that even if only some of the offenders are getting tickets, less manatees are probably getting hurt just because of the folks who will follow the rules when posted. I remember when the nickle bottle tax started in CT. I like many others was pretty upset, but after a couple of decades, you can again walk barefoot in most natural places and along most suburban roads without getting cut. My point is, it takes a while and not everyone plays by the rules, but in the long run, it is probably a good thing. As a boater not restricted by manatee zones, but living in CT, we have our share of "steerage" speed zones that are well monitored. |

Several, but not all, of those here who complain about having to slow down for manatee zones are real pains in the ass. Therefore, I am in favor of more and longer zones that favor manatees. Seriously, I'm in favor of almost anything that slows down the overweight "cruisers" who traverse the ICW and throw huge wakes. Seriously, you are a retard. FB |

Actually, the weeds aren't that bad this year, but there is a lot of idle/no wake zones because of the manatees. I guess that's OK though because all the alligators & manatees make for a bumpy ride if you get going very fast. Works great. You've mastered it. Now show us some more! Almost. *The Silver Springs Run is a tributary of the St Johns. Upstream a bit from Blue Springs.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Not quite. The Silver Springs run exits into the Oklawaha River which ends at the St. Johns north of Lake George. However, this is not navigable as the Rodman Dam is near the end of the Ocklawaha. It has no boating locks. The dam was built as part of the Cross FL. Barge Canal boondoggle canceled by, I think, Nixon. The enviros have been trying to get the dam removed for years. Good thing I think, but they have been blocked by bubbas with bassboats, as the reservoir has turned into a major Bass fishery. |

What you call Silver Springs run is actually the Silver River, isn't it?- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - Yea, that's the official name. It's only a couple of miles long, less than five anyway. Last time I was there, there was a troop of wild monkeys on the banks, said to be descended from Tarzan movie escapees. The Creature from the Black Lagoon was also filmed there. You can actually go from Lake Dora (a little north of Orlando) thru some canals and other lakes and the Oklawaha all the way to the boil of Silver Springs. It's a 6-8 hr. round trip. The spring owners don't like it and the famous glass bottomed boats will run you over. I've heard it and all other spring outflows called runs all my life here in FL. There is another spring that does join the St.John's called Wekiwa Springs about a half mile from my house. In the state park, IIRC, the ouflow is called the Wekiwa run, it then becomes the Wekiva River and goes to the St. John's. At least it used to, haven't been to the spring in a long time. |
