Now we know it is his. :) According to the article you cited, the boat burns biodiesel at the rate of 2 gallons an hour...so...what's your point? Your little boat burns more fuel than that. Is that at idle? Most houseboats 50-60' get about 1 mpg. Even doubling the mileage via diesel, sats the boat is going to go 4 mph to achive a 2 gallon /per hour burn. And the boat is a lot bigger than the 1mpg ones. |

Granted, Gore's houseboat has a much more modern diesel, but I suspect it is bigger and it's pushing a heck of a lot more weight. I wonder what the "cruise" speed is ..... maybe 2 kts? Eisboch |

I wonder what the "cruise" speed is .... maybe 2 kts? 2 gph is absolutley bogus for anything much faster than walking speed. That implies a gas engine putting out less than 20 hp or a diesel putting out less than 40. It's true that a diesel 40 with the right reduction gear and prop would move it along at a very slow cruise but that's not the way most people would want to run it. Most house boats need a lot more power than that just for maneuvering since they have a huge amount of windage. In any kind of crosswind they will move as fast sideways as straight ahead. There are a lot of rental house boats on the Rideau Canal in Canada. Watching them maneuver in and out of the locks on a windy day is pretty good entertainment. |

At very close to WOT this thing did about 8 MPH. From my experience with my engine I put the consumption at 2x4GPH (8) or the 1 MPG you stated My... you wouldn't want to cruise too far on that rig. |

We went out of Page, cruised down about 3 "fingers" in the lake and it took a couple hours. It is really not bad because you really end up anchored up on the beach anyway and you are just looking for a private one. My only real gripe was you needed to get the 75' to get topside steering so you are basically just a bus driver with no mirrors. We really couldn't justify a 3 stateroom 75' boat for the two of us. Thinking of doing a houseboat vacation on Powell with the kids and grandbaby in maybe a year. Any good pointers? Will bring the jetboat also. |

That way, besides fishing, you could go to a marina for supplies, etc. The **** tank seems to get full pretty quick, but then there were usually 7 or 8 of us, eating real well. Take along dvds because you may be in a place where there's no tv reception. Also, check with them about their lines. We rented a houseboat one time and they didn't have much for lines to tie up anywhere. We would find a cove and run the houseboat in bow first to have access to land. A storm came and whipped the houseboat around so much that both of the inadequate lines they gave us broke. |

A storm came and whipped the houseboat around so much that both of the inadequate lines they gave us broke. That sounds strange to me. The boat we rented had 1/2"or 5/8" yacht braid anchor lines rigged from the stern, two anchors. You beached the bow and put the anchors out at 45degree angles, dug into the sand with a shovel. There was a big coil of this line on each side of the stern and shorter docking lines on the bow, same style. http://esteroriverheights.com/electr...ake_powell.jpg We went out of Page but I understand Bullfrog is more secluded. With the way gas prices are, the whole place may be more secluded now. I don't really know anything about it that they don't tell you when you rent the boat. I was sort of surprised they don't need the operator to have any particular credentials to rent this boat. They will come get you if you don't feel comfortable docking tho. The first thing I did once we got well clear of the marina was to see how it handled. With 2 screws you can maneuver these hogs around pretty well ... if the wind isn't too bad. Visibility from the helm is a problem. It is like driving a bus- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - No anchors at all on the houseboats at Grider Hill on Lake Cumberland. I think maybe being rentals they don't want newbies getting the anchor fouled or some such. I'll tell ya, a 70' or so houseboat with a single 75hp Evinrude is a handful! Almost impossible in the wind. As a matter of fact, one year we got there and there was a hell of a storm, and of course we wanted to get out of the marina and get the festivities started, so they told us where their maintenence dock was in a cove and we tied up to that. |
