I recently picked up a Glastron Alpha which will need a large amount
of work to make it usable. I plan on making it yet another one of my "projects". There is a large amount of gel coat cracking, 3 patches that either Daryl or his other brother daryl attempted to do, and is in need of a new sail. Right now am unsure if it is even worthwhile to refurbish but am in the research stage. So far I have not been able to locate any information about the internal structure of the boat such as whether or not there is any wood underneath the glass anywhere, how the boat is constructed, ect. Assuming I go forward with this little project I will need to locate some parts such as the edge rail, perhaps replacement rudder and center board and the like. As I said I am just doing some research right now but any info you might know would be appreciated. In general most fiberglass boats up until fairly recently used wood as the foundation for a lot of structural components such as the stringers, floor, deck, and transom. Even today it is common but a few are beginning to realize that composite materials are not going to eventually rot like wood. Before embarking on extensive work I suggest to try to locate areas that might contain wood. It's ok to drill test holes. If you pull up wet wood mush then you might have issues. Fill test holes with an epoxy/chopped glass filler mix to close. |
