Nice piece of music, but from what I have seen and heard, it is not easy
to sing. The Brit's anthem is both decent music and easy to sing. The Star
Spangled banner is not easy to sing, which is surprising, since the tune
was lifted from the Brit drinking song.

My pet peeve about performances of the Star Spangled Banner, especially
singers, is when this line is almost always screwed up:

"Oh say, does that star spangled banner yet wave?"

The screw ups do "B-a-n-n-e-r" as if the notes in the music score were
climbing up and down a ladder.

The correct music score is "Ba-" then to the higher note and down with
"n-ner"

I can't help to listen for this everytime I hear someone singing it at
ballgames, etc. Most screw it up and sing it wrong.

Robert Merrill is my favorite. First time I heard him sing it, never
cared for anyone else.

It's a tough sing. Some weeks ago here I suggested "God Bless America"
would be a better national anthem for many reasons, not the least of
which is that it is "singable." Naturally, the low-brain-outputers
objected in their usual way.

Harry,
I hate to tell you this, but this is not the best place to make
effective suggestions on changing our National Anthem. I think i am
beginning to understand why you make up these stories, you keep making
"suggestions" but for some reason no one listens to you.

Tough sing or not, all it takes is a little effort to learn and do it
properly. It's not just amateurs. Many professional performers do it
incorrectly.

I know it's a minor, stupid thing, but it really ****es me off.

Well, perhaps you should fund a private foundation that sponsors singing
lessons for those who want to take on the anthem. :)

Good idea. I'll call it the "STARS Society" "Sing The Anthem Right,
Stupid"

but I think the best service
song of modern times is Panzerlied by Kurt Wiehle (*not* Kurt Weill).
It's a great piece of music, unfortunately written for the
Panzerwaffe.

I have a copy, as well as the Hitlerlied.....
