I figure the volume on the heavy metal is high to drown out the sound
of that air cooled v-twin

On one of those vids they have a demonstration where they stop the
boat, lift the prop out of the mud, then cram the lower end back down
and you can see the mud churning but no boat motion. The pilot then
rocks the tiller handle back and forth causing the boat to squiggle a
bit, then it moves forward, then not long till up to spped.

pretty remarkable, actually.
