Same old schitt...and did you know he was a POW? Why do political posts here? I dont know Harry's reason but I admit sometimes I just cannot help myself although I try to only respond to them and not do the original post. I admit I have done plenty of them . Why? Because I cannot find a good venue for them elsewhere an am consequently frustrated. When I post to political NGs, they normally have so many posts that mine get lost in the flood of others. Also, I find that most people here are reasonably smart so more than half the time the responses are intelligent whereas that is not true in most political NGs. I really wish I could find a good place to post political stuff cuz then I would not be tempted to post here. Whats your reason Harry? |

The guts to sign up for what, precisely? The military? What for? There are plenty of ways to serve one's country; the military is only one of them, and no more valid or important than many of the others. Obama lived in the United States until he was six, and then spent about four years in Indonesia. At the age of 10, he returned to his birthplace, Hawaii, to live until he was graduated from high school. After that, he attended college and settled in the continental United States. What point are you trying to make by repeatedly harping upon the four years Obama lived in Indonesia? To any rational, educated person, that would be a plus. There's nothing quite like living in an entirely different culture to open your mind. |

It isn't to change the minds, such as they are, of the righties here! :) I'm an "irregular" poster on a couple of political blogs where the subject is discussed in at least a semi-serious fashion. You don't post on any political blogs, they would chew you up and spit you out. You wouldn't last more than two minutes. snerk This from a guy who couldn't make it in college or the marines? |

What point are you trying to make by repeatedly harping upon the four years Obama lived in Indonesia? To any rational, educated person, that would be a plus. There's nothing quite like living in an entirely different culture to open your mind. I know I am going to regret this, but since I am not feeling well, I may as well get sicker. First, your point about service to one's country: I agree with you. There's a difference though in serving in a capacity of one's choice .... a capacity that one likes or may further a personal objective versus serving without choice (when the draft was in use) or serving due to a sense of patriotic duty or obligation. Most people that serve in the military do so for one term of enlistment or commission and then get the hell out. I can understand how four years in the Peace Corps or doing Community Organizing can be personally rewarding, but serving in the military is a duty for most, without direct personal benefit. The other issue regarding Obama's living in Indonesia: Many rational, educated people know that one's nurture during youth has a strong influence in adult thought. Four years between the age of 6 and 10 living in a different culture doesn't "open" one's mind. It establishes it. We may disagree about the potential outcome, but I happen to live in a traditional American culture. I respect others, have lived for several years in others, but choose to live here. If I didn't, I'd move. My preference for a President includes one that is 100 percent committed to preserving America's culture and heritage, not changing it. Eisboch |
