Here is a link from Microsoft explaining about why it's media player
does not play MPEG2 videos without extra software. If you computer came preloaded with Roxio, or Intervideo you may not be aware of the problems as the extra codecs are loaded with them. If you load windows clean and stock your DVD Player does not automatically play these files. On the Microsoft site there are 4 links in particular where you can get the extra codecs, but note, none of them are free... So, if anyone is interested in learning about these issues here is the paragraph, and the link: Here is the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992/en-us And here is a clip of the paragraph: However, MPEG-1 system streams do not exclusively use the .mpg and .mpeg extensions. MPEG-2 program streams also frequently use .mpg and .mpeg file extensions, but they contain MPEG-2-encoded video. Because Microsoft Windows operating systems provide only an MPEG-1 video decoder, Windows Media Player cannot play MPEG-2 program streams without an additional MPEG-2 video decoder (also known as a DVD decoder pack) installed. For more information about purchasing DVD decoder packs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...r/plugins.aspx Rowdy Mouse Racing, in case some of you weren't paying attention... |

I wasn't talking about you, I have passed that link along to my wife who is working on it later tonight after we take care of some business.. I don't recognize you but thank you for your help. I was talking about a couple of trolls who are having a little fun at my expense lately. I have them kill filed here so they shouldn't be a problem anymore.. Thanks, you are the only one who posted an answer.. |

Just want to add that this all started at another group where I asked for help, it seems to have followed me here. Not related to your post at all, again, thanks, looking at it later... |

He's probably a bit bored laying around and could use some company & a challenge, so now would be a safe time to go when he's not liable to harass you too much and probably couldn't catch you when you irritate him. |

Scotty,
There are quite a few FREE mpeg2 codecs out there, the link below is one of them. Mpeg2 is the codec required to play DVDs on your computer, and yes, windows does not come stock with them. Big deal... install it. Quicktime, using the MOV extension, doesn't come with windows either, but you obviously had no problem installing quicktime. Just about any camcorder you buy will work with the correct codec installed, and I believe Tom offered one up to you for free. Do a search on "NIMO CODEC," and you'll find a package that contains just about every codec you'll ever need. The only camcorders I would avoid is one that records using the AVCHD format. That is a different animal due to the HD. One last thing... and tape drive camcorder will require you to "play" the tape via firewire or usb2 to get the video to your computer. Obviously, this can be time consuming for long videos. The slick feature to make it less painfull, is that the camcorder can be controlled by the PC during the capture process. A DVD or HD camcorder will allow you to copy (as opposed to play) the video files to your computer. Much faster. No offense, but this is very simple, and I'm sure Tom was being good natured in stating that very fact. You know him better than I, so maybe he was just being a jerk afterall. ;-) g I hope this helps. --Mike "SmallBoats.com" wrote in message . com...
